Better Bone Density Through Motorcycling ?

Better Bone Density Through Motorcycling ?
Posted Image We can all agree that motorcycles help you feel younger, but can riding actually make your body more youthful?

A Medical College of Georgia study finds that "A daily dose of whole body vibration may help reduce the usual bone density loss that occurs with age," on top of improving muscle strength and weight loss... so perhaps it follows that the pulse of a v-twin and the judder of handgrips might help aging bones get stronger?

The extrapolation isn't entirely............

FOR SALE; 1895 Hildebrand & Wolfmuller

Motorcycle Auction
The First EVER Motorcycle Up For Sale!
Posted Image1895 Hildebrand & Wolfmuller

Bonhams made an uncommon announcement that a complete 1895 Hildebrand & Wolfmuller has been consigned and will be offered at the firm's first annual Las Vegas Motorcycle Auction in January.

Coming from a private American motorcycle collection where it has resided for approximately half a century, the 115-year old motorbike has been lightly and sympathetically restored some decades ago and is wonderfully patinated.

In addition to its excellent condition, this pioneering motorcycle is of the utmost historical significance because it was the first powered two-wheeler to enter series production and is the first vehicle to which the name "motorcycle" (motorrad in German) was ever applied.

This extraordinary news follows the record-breaking sale of another Hildebrand & Wolfmuller offered by.....

A deceleration-sensing Safety Light

'' A deceleration-sensing Safety Light''
Could This Innovative New Light Save Your Life?
Everyone knows brake lights are to alert drivers behind you, but what about when you roll off the throttle, and tailgating drivers fail to notice your decreasing rate of speed?

Would you like them to know you’re decelerating, rather than potentially becoming another statistic?

Nikkos Designs of Fort Myers, Fla. has a deceleration-sensing Safety Light pending that looks like a good idea.

Bob Price, president and CEO of B.C. Systems – which is due to begin selling the light in a month or so -– is busy drumming up interest, and he got our attention a while back when he began getting the word out.

Quannon 150 - A Fresh Face in the Crowd

From the September, 2010 issue of Motorcyclist
Quannon 150 - A Fresh Face in the Crowd
You've probably never heard of Kymco, but the Taiwanese manufacturer has been in business since 1963. Best known for its cruisers and scooters, Kymco is branching out into the beginner sportbike market with the new Quannon 150.

Finally, there's an alternative to the ubiquitous Honda Rebel and Kawasaki Ninja 250!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I was handed the key. I conjured up visions of riding off into the sunset, the wind tousling my ponytail. And there was this cute group of saucer-eyed kids who waved eagerly as I whizzed by. But my first venture aboard the Quannon wasn't everything I hoped for, as I had a close encounter with a distracted driver who pulled out in front of me! Fortunately, I dodged that bullet and my subsequent rides were much more enjoyable.

Powered by an air-cooled, four-valve, four-stroke single, the 149cc Quannon is......

Scooter of the Year Kymco Downtown 300i

Motorcycle.com Best of 2010 Awards
:FIRST:Scooter of the Year
:KYM:Kymco Downtown 300i

This year the scooter market is still a bit punch-drunk from the economic uppercut we received in 2009, but from the looks of it the manufacturers are coming back to their senses with some new and exciting models appearing late this year. The scooter that brought the most excitement and gave us the most hope in 2010 was the Kymco Downtown 300i.

We got an early impression of the Downtown in May, riding it from Austin to the 2010 Amerivespa rally in San Antonio.

The Downtown 300i excels in so many categories with its engaging aesthetics and......

Is the EPA Trying to Poison Our Motorcycles?

:USA:Is the EPA Trying to Poison Our Motorcycles?
On October 13, the Environmental Protection Agency approved an increase in the ethanol portion of blended gasoline from 10 to 15 percent. However, the use of the new E15 fuel is to be confined to model year 2007 and newer cars and light trucks. The use is not approved for motorcycles at this time.

So the quick answer to the title of this piece is NO. The problem is that once the high percentage blend is offered, there is a chance that it will make its way into your bike.

The American Motorcyclist Association has released the following statement:

"The AMA supports the use of cleaner-burning fuels, but we are concerned that........

ATK semi-auto prototype: the ultimate learner cruiser

ATK semi-auto prototype: the ultimate learner cruiser

If there’s one thing Americans fear more than universal healthcare, it’s the dreaded clutch mechanism. That’s a problem when it comes to learning to ride; not only are motorcycles not nice, safe SUVs, but they’re equipped with the devil’s-own manual gearbox. Enter ATK, in addition to providing Harley dealers with a new range of small and mid-capacity, affordable entry-level bikes, the Utah-based company is developing this semi-automatic, 250cc learner bike that should help new riders overcome their initial fears.

Ignore the lame baby cruiser form factor for the time being and concentrate instead on the mechanical function. As you can see, this prototype is actually equipped with a......

Kymco Venox: Performs as solid as it looks

Kymco Venox: Performs as solid as it looks
KYMCO VENOX 250

Kymco owners have the perfect response to the BMW or Honda rider who curls their lip at the Taiwanese-built bike. For Kymco got its start building parts for Honda back in 1963, and today constructs engines for BMW's G450X, among others.

Its first direct foray into two wheels was a 1970 scooter, with the Kymco brand launched in 1992.

My handsome mount is the Venox, a 250cc cruiser that's been on sale here for around a year. It looks like a big bike that's shrunk in the wash, especially when you swing a leg over. But settle in and you'll find a grown-up riding position that should accommodate taller riders than my 1.67-metre frame.

Fire her up and there's a pleasantly throaty note from the stubby twin pipes, though not as throaty as the after-market set I heard recently that imparted the gruffly sexy note of a more powerful machine.

Either way, this one......
